THE SCIENCE OF BREATHWORK

What science is discovering about breathing, the brain, the nervous system, and emotional experience.

Breathing is both automatic and consciously modifiable. Because of this, changes in breathing can influence physiological arousal, attention, perception, and the experience of the body.

Scientific research is beginning to explore how different breathing practices may affect stress, anxiety, emotional experience, and psychological wellbeing.

Why Breathwork Matters

Breathing is both automatic and consciously modifiable. Because of this, breathing can influence physiological arousal, attention, perception, and the experience of the body.

Scientific research is beginning to explore how different breathing practices may affect stress, anxiety, emotional experience, and psychological wellbeing.

The evidence is growing, but it is not uniform. Different techniques produce different physiological and psychological effects, and the quality of research varies considerably.

PROMISING EVIDENCE

The Brain and Breathing

Breathing and brain activity are closely connected. Research suggests that the timing and rhythm of breathing can interact with neural activity, influencing aspects of attention, memory, and emotional processing. While these initial findings are significant, more research is needed to fully understand the specific mechanisms and long-term implications.

Zelano et al., 2016 · PubMed PMID: 27927961

Stress and Anxiety

Several studies and reviews have investigated breathing-based practices in relation to perceived stress and anxiety. Research suggests some breathing practices may help reduce perceived stress and anxiety but results vary by technique, design, comparison group, and population. Not all controlled studies find specific benefits beyond attention or placebo.

PROMISING EVIDENCE

A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis found that breathwork interventions were associated with reductions in self-reported stress and anxiety, although the evidence was heterogeneous and study quality varied.

Fincham et al., 2023 · PubMed PMID: 36624160

PROMISING EVIDENCE

A separate meta-analysis found that while breathwork showed promise, results were not uniform, and some controlled studies yielded neutral findings that could not be distinguished from attention-based placebo benefits.

EMERGING RESEARCH

Emotional Experience and Interoception

Interoception is the ability to perceive and interpret signals arising from within the body.

Breathing naturally draws attention toward internal sensations, making the relationship between breathing, bodily awareness, and emotional experience an interesting area of research.

Research on interoception provides useful scientific context, while direct research specifically examining Breathwork and interoception remains limited.

What Research Currently Suggests

Stress regulation

Anxiety

Physiological regulation

Emotional and bodily awareness

Some breathing interventions have been associated with reductions in perceived stress.

Some studies report reductions in anxiety symptoms, although findings are not uniform.

Controlled breathing can influence aspects of respiratory and autonomic physiology.

Breathing may provide a direct way of bringing attention toward bodily sensations and present-moment experience.

The strength of evidence varies by breathing technique, population, study design, and outcome measured.

What Science Has Not Established

  • universally releases or removes trauma
  • cures PTSD
  • cures anxiety or depression
  • treats burnout as a medical condition
  • permanently changes personality
  • releases traumatic memories stored in the body
  • produces the same effects for everyone

Different breathing practices should not be treated as interchangeable and evidence for one technique cannot automatically be transferred to another. The most responsible approach is to remain curious about what the research suggests while being equally clear about what it does not yet establish.

Experience Meets Evidence

Conscious Connected Breathwork and anxiety

Scientific research and lived experience are not the same thing.

Research helps us understand patterns across groups of people under controlled conditions. A personal Breathwork experience is individual, subjective, and influenced by many factors.

Both perspectives can be valuable, as long as they are not confused with one another.

My approach is grounded in experience, careful guidance, and respect for what research currently tells us.

I do not promise a particular outcome.

I create the conditions for you to breathe, feel, and remain present with your own experience.

Research is evolving. This page will continue to develop as better studies become available.
